What are the arguments against "an eye for an eye" justice?

The famous Gandhi quote about it seems rather quippy and unconvincing. Courts are imbued with the power to carry out punishments that ordinary citizens are not. It clearly hasn't made the whole world go blind when enforced, it just makes people who perpetrate crimes endure the same ordeal that their victims had to suffer.
